Based on the Orff Schulwerk and Kodaly methodology, students explore the technical and creative corners of music education using voice, pitched and non-pitched instruments, and movement. Alongside the Orff and Kodaly instruction, students delve into both sacred and secular music, music history, composition, and music technology where they get to explore and develop their own unique individual music tastes. All students have performance opportunities throughout the school year such as liturgical celebrations, school Christmas and Spring concerts, and the Opera Together program in partnership with the San Francisco Opera Guild. Students in the 4th grade to 8th grade classes make up the Saint Isabella School Choir who receive an additional performance opportunity at the annual Archdiocesan Choral Festival.
Originally from southern California, Ms. Phillips received her Bachelor of Arts in Music Education from Cal Poly Pomona and her Master of Education from Alliant University. She relocated to the Bay Area and began her teaching career and has since been a part of the San Francisco Archdiocese for several years at both Saint Isabella and Saint Patrick Schools. Ms. Phillips is a classically trained mezzo-soprano and gives special attention to the impact of singing in the community in each classroom. Outside of Saint Isabella School Ms. Phillips does work in food and agriculture as a nutritionist and farmers market manager, and uses music in the classroom to cultivate appreciation for and connection to the earth. Ms. Phillips fosters a safe and sacred space for students’ holistic social-emotional growth, creativity, community, and appreciation for all cultures through the learning and creation of music together.
